The 2021 Mile High Collegiate Baseball League season has seen no shortage of offense. With a 5-2 record and a substantial 35 runs put on the board in their last two games, Thunder Academy has been at the core of this hitting spectacle.

In Monday’s game Thunder Academy was coming off two thrilling doubleheader losses to the Colorado Lumberjacks. They had their sights set on finishing games in front, and putting up big offensive numbers at  an extremely hitter-friendly Denver Christian High School. Bearing the heated turf under record breaking June highs on Monday, they dug themselves into an 11-3 hole against the Denver Generals.

But the hard hits began to come in the fifth. This all started on a leadoff triple by outfielder Dru De Vera who was then knocked home on an RBI double by Bryce Zimmerer. All Junior College designated hitter Josh Cameron followed this up with a dinger to right field giving them their first long ball of the night. This started out what became a big night for him. Cache Stone’s two run RBI double brought the deficit down to 11-8 and put Thunder Academy within striking distance.

Extended at-bats late in the game put enough pressure on the Denver Generals pitchers, as they continually surrendered runs and unable to keep up with the Thunder on the base-paths. The Thunder’s speed on the base-paths set up for the big blow on offense. Needing to avoid a wild pitch  with the game tied at 13, Dru Devera managed to find an 0-2 pitch to line one over to center for a three-run homer. This put Thunder Academy in front 16-13. Devera capped off an impressive four hit day while four other players on the team had a multi-hit game. Among these players was Josh Cameron who went 6-for-6 with four RBI’s.

The hitting party did not end there, as the team dealt more punishing blows that even 15 runs and 20 hits for the Generals wasn’t enough. Thunder Academy emerged victorious 20-15.

Tuesday’s game against the Colorado Cannons saw a similar scenario unfold. A late lead taken in the sixth by  Thunder Academy would turn into a 15-3 blowout.

This time the long-ball was on even greater display as four different Thunder players homered, including leadoff hitting shortstop Jonah Cox, who had four hits on the day.

Despite early promises of the long ball by the Cannons, Thunder Academy managed to limit the damage with their pitching. Starter Owen Petrak held the Cannons to five hits and three runs over seven innings of work. As if Thunder Academy was not already an offensive powerhouse, these last two games certainly put them on the map as an elusive bunch in all facets of the game, particularly on offense. So far they are looking like a top competitor in the 2021 Mile High Collegiate League season.
